Busy, busy, busy - but time for pasta

As quickly as you make it - the girls fronted up with their bowls. Also there to help roll the pasta through the machine - here was what was left to dry and use another day. Not a very glamorous picture of me but it does show that I do spend some time in the kitchen covered in flour. Fun, Fun, Fun.

Then when I have proven to the family that I can do some domestics, I couldn't help but layout a bali pop I'd just purchased - just to see the gorgeous range of colours - beautiful and to start imagining what I can do with them. My friend Christine did a lovely green quilt lately with a 60 degree ruler - just loved the affect, take a look at this on her blog. So I got to and started sewing in groups of three...
Then late into the night - cut, cut, cut and of course then the girls helped me with the design

The girls had a ball playing, it is interesting to see where their talents lead, Ruth definitely has an eye for colour and pattern - Grace just enjoyed the amazing array of shapes and colour to play with.

It was an enjoyable session, and in fact Ruth designed the centre and assisted with the colour placement throughout - I feel so proud of her, I hope she keeps up this interest/talent for patterns and colour.

Here is the final layout - now all I need to do is sew it all together, and get my dining room table back. It's been a long time since I've been able to have the machine out, and not be fiddled with - having more issues with Zoe the cat - wanting to attack the thread or sleep just behind the needle... The quilt will be a double bed size "square" - next will be how to quilt this..

Getting ahead for Christmas

Red Robins for Christmas by Gail Pan

Or am I just late....LOL

I found this gorgeous stitchery pattern "Red Robins for Christmas 2011" on Gail Pan's blog site "Gail Pan Designs" before New Year.

I just can't believe I've actually completed it. As my quilting friends know, I have a slight love for Cottage Garden Threads - so used No 502 - Hippeastrum to do this stitchery, it felt christmasy, I think I'll do a red on white or white on red would be lovely too.

I now just need to decide whether it should be a wall hanging, front of a bag or journal cover. Any thoughts?

Now I'm ahead for Christmas pressies - hopefully I can keep up with something a month.

Idea - NOTYQ Sit n Sew day with the kids

I happily mentioned at the last NOTYQ Guild meeting that we should have a "bring along a child day - one of your own, at least one you know" hee, hee. The idea was to take advantage of our extra sewing day in March.

This idea has been brewing for a few years, and personally I'd like to take the opportunity of some more time with Ruth and the sewing machine.

The concept is to prepare a project, based on the child's level of skill - and only you would know this.

I personally will be aiming to do the following project with Ruth - while there is a bit of top stitching involved, it is relatively straight forward, and obviously I am there to assist her. It is a reversible roll-up tote bag.

I also think it is achieveable in the day, if cutting out is done before hand.

I'd love feedback on this tutorial that I found on the Internet - Jenny from "Stumbles and Stitches" has some wonderful patterns, and this one caught my eye. Ruth is only 7, but I think it's a good starter, she has done some sewing - a bag made from a tea towel - see an earlier post from when she was 5.

I'm hoping there is enough interest from the group - if not I'm happy to do it with Ruth, in March, anyway.

Are there other patterns you could recommend? Especially if you feel I'm overextending Ruth's abilities with this one - I don't want to turn her off sewing ;-)

A lovely quilted mat for Chloe

A dear friend had a little girl, late August. Once I knew she was expecting, I got to and designed what I thought was going to be another cot quilt for the year.

Well fellow quilters, the best laid plans turn to other ideas as they develop and so here is the result. A little square mat for Chloe to lay on, roll on and eventually crawl on. Hopefully one day it will be a small lap quilt to snuggle under in front of the TV.

It started as a small drawing in my sketch book, which was then blown up on the photocopier. My darling daughter then coloured in the mane on the lion - thus the multicoloured mane was born. I machine appliqued the pieces on to batting with lovely Aurifil threads, then used monofilament to machine it down on to the green background.

Thanks to the ladies at NOTYQ Guild for their guidance with the colours around the border, matching the threads and special thanks to Claire for helping me incorporate Chloe's name on the corner. Made it so easy to quilt.

I hope it get's lots of use and love.

Cot quilt for my daughter's 2nd birthday

My daughter is now 2 1/2 but I thought I'd show the quilt I made her for her 2nd birthday - while she can still use it in her cot.

I used a lovely jelly roll - this fabric I also used to make a skirt for my number one daughter.

I then used some pre-shaped butterflies, all I had to do was iron them on to some lovely fabric and on to the quilt top.

I used a pre-printed quilt fabric, so all I had to do was follow the lines, lots of fun and less stress.

I enjoyed the whole process of this small quilt - I hope she loves it as much as I do.

Wow this is my 50th post...

Good evening everyone - imagine making 50 posts...

Thought I'd show a cot quilt I made a couple of months ago - and only now getting around to posting it. I found this wonderful fabric range at Spotlight - it was a big choice between this and some pirate/nautical themed fabric as this was for a gorgeous little baby boy.

Well I chose the hot air balloons - certainly something slightly different. A very easy quilt design, just fussy cut the balloons and used the other themed fabric for borders. Mum helped me to put the binding on and gave advice on the quilting itself.

Welcome again Brooklyn - we all wish you a life full of excitement...and not too many ups and downs...

Our new addition - Zoe

Good evening all, I know it has been an absolute age, but not a lot has occurred of late on the sewing front. Though we did gain a new addition to the Csorba household over this weekend.

This is DD2 - Grace, checking her out - down at her level.

And here she is - our gorgeous Zoe, a ragdoll cat, with beautiful chocolate coloured points.

It's been great fun keeping track of her just in the kitchen. Soon she'll be let loose in the loungeroom - then free range.

Naturally the girls are delighted - and surprisingly gentle.

Ruth is spending lots of time playing, and Grace - well she's two and very inquisitive - quiet isn't in her vocabularly, Zoe will just have to get used to this little person yelling Cat and Zoe interchangeably.

Great choice of name by Ruth - purrfect...

T Model Fabric - and now the start of a Double Wedding Ring

1st ring - happy with shape and colour

Since making the clothing and the handbag, I've now started on a Double Wedding Ring quilt for my DH's significant birthday in a couple of years.

Yes, I need that long to hand piece and hopefully hand quilt this for him. Here is ring number 1 - just wanted to test the colours and test that the rings will be round. It is looking very promising. I have not yet pressed it with an iron

This is not going to be one of those lovely floral colourwash Double Wedding Rings - maybe one day I'll make one for myself ;-)

I'd love to hear your comments.

T Model Fabric - what a find

Good evening fellow sewers and quilters, previously on my blog I mentioned I'd found this wonderful fabric in America with T Model Ford cars on it - and as my DH is a collector of these lovely cars, and we attend many car rallies throughout the year with our daughters, I naturally had to buy a bolt or two - yes you have heard correctly - a bolt or two :-) couldn't resist.

So what do you do with "that much fabric" - well of course clothing for DH and DD1 and DD2. They were all proud to show off their new outfits.

Naturally I didn't wish to feel left out so I designed myself a "rally handbag" - measuring my purse and wanting external pockets on both sides for our mobile phones - it has worked a treat - I think I could have sold a few of these on the last rally, amazing.

Now for the leftover - well DH has a significant birthday in a few years time so I have time to put together a lovely handmade quilt. I'll keep you posted to it's developments.

Another school year begins

Here are my gorgeous daughters 1 and 2 ready for school and creche. Hats on and ready to go - even a flower for the teacher, if it makes it there.

Quiet lately...

It has been a long time since my last post - hopefully it being a new year, though I realise it is now mid February, I will blog more often.

I wanted to show you my beautiful KK gift from Anita. Obviously from the quality of this pressie she is also a beautiful hand quilter "sashiko stitching", as well as machine quilter. Anita is a professional machine quilter - running her own business "Hillside Quilting", so where she found the time to do this beautiful hand work astounds me.

Thank you again Anita for this lovely gift - my DH has found the right location for it.

Cup Weekend with the T Models in Daylesford

Every year over the Cup Weekend we visit a part of Victoria. This year was no exception - we braved the rainy weather and visited lovely Daylesford and the surrounds. Here is a lovely line up of the cars in front of Anderson's Mill.

As part of the rally we usually dress-up. Well I came across this fantastic fabric with T Models and couldn't resist - so two vests, one for my husband an one for my eldest daughter - both reversible "T-Model Fords on the outside and Holden's on the inside" - caused a bit of a stir. I also made a little outfit for my youngest daughter...

I also made myself a lovely handbag which I'll show in the next post.
We had a lovely weekend once again, despite the rain.

Well done to the Model T Ford Club of Victoria and the organisers.

Nappy Bag with Rosalie's Plastic coated Fabric

Finally found the right weather to photograph my nappy bag design. I fell in love with Rosalie Quinlan's first range of plastic coated fabrics and just had to make this nappy bag.

As you can see the outer bag serves as the change mat - using magnetic clasps to attach to the bag - the change mat can come right off when baby becomes too big for the simple lay-out. But at 18 months, shown below, Grace still fits the bag, but she is a little tot - still under the 10kg mark.

It is being kindly modelled by Grace at 18 months and husband, who is quite happy to carry it to basketball games. It works extremely well, and carries so much guff. With daughter number one I seemed to carry a multitude of bags but with this one I can carry nappies and assorted extra bits n pieces, as well as a change of clothes, and food snacks in a little lunch bag.

The little boxes are great, and I did make them to sit side by side in the bag - removable to use in the baby room - but they now belong in the bathroom top draw for hair clips and slides - another great use, fit perfectly.

The great thing about this plastic coated fabric is that you can wipe it clean, fantastic.

Just a couple of hits when working with this type of fabric - minimize the use of the iron, low heat or use a applique ironing mat with it and the walking foot works great, I had minimal sticking issues.

Thanks Rosalie for such a beautiful range, with a practical use.

Two Butterflies for my girls

Well - finally finished. Here are the two butterflies "Blossom - Melly and Me pattern", I finished on retreat a couple of weeks ago. I'm smiling as it is another project finished. I enjoyed making these, the embroidery was fun and choosing the fabric was great - thanks to my friends for sorting me out on this - I think I have enough fabric for a couple more. Thanks Simone for the Image.

Dragonflies and Pearls

I found these lovely dragonflies at the Stitches and Craft show today and just couldn't resist adding them to my latest embroidery. Mum had a little bracelet of "fake pearls" and thought I could use them for something crafty - and I had just the right use.

Once again I have used my favourite threads from Cottage Garden Threads - Perle 12 - Larkspur, No 602.
Incidently I met Pam today and Brenda Ryan, they are so giving of their knowledge. Soon I will put up a little video of how to open these gorgeous threads so as to keep them nice - stay tuned, Pam gave me a demo today and I'd like you all to see how this is done - just wonderful.

Tree of Friendship - another Birthday present

Yes, another post - I'm having a great evening.

This is a gift I made for a friend's significant birthday - the idea came from one of Kellie's designs "Don't Look Now"- I just doodled a tree and added 51 hearts. It was quite enjoyable and fun to make.

I'd like to thank Anita Ellis of Hillside Quilting for doing such a divine job of quilting it or me - just beautiful.

Then I decided to add a hand embroidered label using my new Cottage Garden Threads - just love working with these threads, I have many more projects on the go with them.

Table Runner for a Friend

It's been such a long time since I last blogged - but time gets away and you want to show something you've created. Well here is Table Runner 2 for the year, which I made for a friend back in February. I've had the cat fabric for quite a few years with this friend in mind.

I thoroughly enjoyed making this, I know it is simple in design and very basically quilted, but I loved the process.

Star Fruit Cushion

Thank you Claire of Matching Pegs for this wonderful tutorial - I have made a second one from 5" charm squares - in my mind it was going to be a pin cushion - well it would hold a lot of pins, hee hee.

Anyway, Ruth thinks it's lovely - I'm sure it will look beautiful on her bed with a lot of other cushions, it will be loved. I had a lovely day last Wednesday down Mentone way - Libby's taken some lovely photos - check out her blog to see where we went - it was heaven, the company was lovely - the shops inspirational and the food yummy.

The Year of "Stash Busting"

While my friends are UFO Busting I have decided that this is the year for Stash Busting. Gifts for friends and family will be made from fabrics in my stash. This way I can justify new lovelies in 2011.

Well I have splurged a little when the Fat Quarter Lady visited the guild last Saturday, but when fat quarters are AUD$2.50, well!!!

Plus as a friend pointed out I have left a pretty major loophole in my resolution - it doesn't mean I can't purchase threads, notions, bag accessories etc, etc, etc hee hee.

Anyway here is stash buster number one - my birthday gift to Debby back in January... Based on a pattern in the Moda Bakeshop Blog - this blog has some fantastic pattern ideas, including the instructions - I can see some future projects here. I am relatively pleased with how this has turned out - the piecing went quickly and I even attempted to use my BSR foot and do three flowers. Even managed an unintentional curved corner - I tried to do a 1 inch binding but couldn't get the corners to mitre correctly - I'll get it right eventually.

Escape to the Dandenongs

Well today I was child-free so a lovely couple of friends and I headed to the Dandenongs. Beautiful weather and lovely company. We were well received at Mrs Martins Quilt shop in Monbulk, with a lovely cup of coffee while we perused the establishment. You ladies out there are so talented, there were so many patterns I just "have to do".

I had a lovely time choosing another Melly and Me pattern - a butterfly for Grace - this will be made during the NOTYQ Retreat in August.

and, I just couldn't resist some Cottage Garden Country Threads - hand dyed threads....I've been looking at this range for ages, they are so beautiful

Then we headed to Tecoma for a lovely bakery lunch and peruse amongst the shops - and yes another quilt shop - Foothills Fabric & Threads, another beautiful shop full of lovely ideas - as well as seeing Leanne Beasleys latest quilt design - Down in the Garden, her stitches are just divine.

There is just not enough hours in my day for all the lovelies I want to make - thanks Libby and Maddie for a lovely day.

My daughters first time...and only five years old

Well this is just too exciting - Ruth, with her own Singer sewing machine - first time sewing.
Isn't gingham just wonderful for the first timer - just follow the lines.

Ruth has made a very simple bag out of a tea towel - and so I'll enter her in Jenny's tea towel challenge. This is a bag for her insect capturing equipment, simple design for a five year old. All I had to do was monitor the sewing and add the pins. She loved the pins so I put in lots so she could remove them.

The singer sewing machine was an Ebay purchase by Bruce - designed for children. All she had to do was turn the wheel and it sews - fantastic, and with more experience we will add batteries and she can turn it on and off to sew.

Christmas Tea Towels Recycled

Thanks to Jenny of Elefantz and her January Tea Towel Challenge to make a tea towel into something new, I have recycled these lovely christmas gifts into oven mitts...using a bit of origami fabric folding and a little sewing. By folding them I gained some padding, thus you don't get burnt handling oven items.

I have received some lovely Christmas tea towels over the years and always put them into general circulation - I like a bit of christmas all year round :-)

Here's how I made them - all three took about 30 minutes - cool :-)

Lay your tea towel flat - right sides down

Fold the long edge over 1/3 and flip the ears back

Repeat with the other side folding over the top of the first fold - flip the ears back

Sew across close to the edge, repeat at the other end

Fold the end over, coming past your sewed edge by about 2 inches and pin the points down - repeat at the other end. These edges could be overstitched later to hide the folds - up to you.

Place a pin half way along the long edge - this pins the edge of the tea towel to the edge.
Then sew right round the edge - the walking foot is a blessing, there are a lot of layers there, take it slowly.

You are then left with a pocket at each end. If you like you can then catch down the edges of the pocket, but I haven't bothered at this stage - might do it in front of the TV tonight.

Taj Mahal and Elephants

I can now show you all what I have been working on in my quilting world. I was unable to until today when I handed it over to my dear friend Anita in celebration of her 60th birthday - may there be many more AB.

I was quite pleased with how this quilt has turned out - I used solvy to assist in sewing the design onto the Taj Mahal - to get the detail.
The elephants were raw edge appliqued after using the Floriani product - Stitch & Wash Fusible to apply them to the fabric background.

This was a fun quilt to make - I quilted some mini Taj Mahals into the corners after binding and some tails and eyes on the elephants - not shown in this photo.

Stationery, Stationery, Stationery...

Well, as my friends know, I have a bit of a thing for stationery - it even gripes me when the word is spelt with an "a" instead of "e" - E for Envelope - easy isn't it.

One of the most exciting days of my life was when I visited Officeworks and I noticed they had shopping trolleys - now that is my sort of shop. As a child I have fond memories of visiting Norman Bros and just browsing all the pencils, pens, diaries, notebooks and imaging how I could possibly use all these things.

Well now my daughter is starting prep next year, and joy of joys we needed to by stationery, just to exciting. And then the labels to put on the stationery, ok Christmas has certainly arrived for me today.

I've just spent a very enjoyable morning labelling her pencils, pencils, oil pastels, excercise books, scrap books, rulers, pencil sharpener, glue sticks and scissors - I'm in heaven...Ruth also has the cutest writing book - so want to have a play.

But how do I label her erasers - do I take the plastic off? Yes, I'm a little weird, I also like things pristine...

Tips for using laminated cottons

Sorry I've been so quiet of late - but we've been down south for a couple of weeks - Tasmania. Just not long enough, so much to see. We definitely need to go back. The girls loved it. Grace slept through most of it and Ruth just loved the walks we went on.

Anyhow...

Ever since seeing Rosalie Quinlans laminated range/collection of Grandmothers Garden I have been inspired with so many ideas for using it. Checkout Rosalie's blog for many ideas...

This morning I came across this blog and was most impressed with the tips and hints for working with this style of fabric. So much so that I wanted you all to see it too - here is the link to the blog "Pink Chalk Studio" and the actual article. I'm hoping to get some time in January to finish a project I wanted to do months ago with this fabric - hopefully you will all see some photos soon.

These are so cute - any reason we can't celebrate Halloween ourselves over here????
Love these pinwheels - we could always put different centres for Christmas, Easter, Birthdays etc.
I've also seen these pinwheels made from fabric on the Cinderberry blog - from Rosalie's first book "Gift"

Hello everyone - just wanted to let you all know that "I WON" - I am so excited, I left a comment on a blog site "Natalie Ross in Stitches" in the hope of winning a beautiful bag pattern and I WON. Thank you so much to Natalie, this is wonderful.

Update on life in the Csorba household

Hello all - I am now revisiting this blog 12 months or so down the track after working on my Quilting Guilds blog - check it out, I'm so proud of it considering the amount of time I currently have.

Speaking of my little time waster - here is a photo of her and I - she is so cute - she's about four weeks old here. I'll put a more up to date photo soon as she's now about 19 weeks - doesn't time fly
